“Service done” is a start. These details make it useful.

Date, mileage, parts and receipts: keep a clear record of DIY work on your BMW with this practical interactive checklist.

CapCar Editorial ·

Six months later, memories can be unclear. When was the work done? Which parts were used? Was the issue fully resolved, or was something left open?

A useful maintenance note answers these questions in a few lines. It helps you and makes conversations with a workshop more specific.

Record why the work was needed

Note the reason: scheduled maintenance, visible wear, an observation or a professionally confirmed diagnosis. Separate your own description from an established finding.

“Rough running observed” describes a symptom. It does not confirm which component caused it.

Describe the completed work clearly

Include the date, mileage, work performed and the person or workshop responsible. Add the manufacturer and part number of the components used, plus the instruction source.

Keep unfinished tasks explicitly marked as open. Ordering a part does not mean a repair has been completed.

Keep evidence and the outcome together

Store invoices, relevant photographs and any diagnostic reports with the entry. Note which final checks were performed and whether the original observation recurred afterwards.

Before sharing a record, remove personal information from receipts that the recipient does not need.

Be precise about verification

Label owner-performed work and workshop work accurately. A record you create yourself is not an independently verified certificate or a manufacturer service entry.

This clarity makes the history easier to understand. It does not guarantee a higher resale value.

Start with the last job you actually completed. Only fill in missing details when you can support them with evidence.

Use this article’s vehicle checklist to keep the next step with your car. Choose a vehicle, save your notes and checked items, then open the relevant CapCar feature. This preparation checklist does not mark work as completed.

A short entry you can understand later

An illustrative entry could read: “Cabin filter replaced by the vehicle owner. Actual part cost: €28. Receipt reference saved. No unresolved observation recorded.” Add the real date, mileage and verified part number from your own job; do not copy example values into your vehicle history. This is an owner record, not an independently verified workshop entry.
