Without a garage · 3 min read

No garage? Start with the right workspace.

No garage of your own? Plan the workspace, tools and support your BMW job needs, with a simple decision guide.

CapCar Editorial ·

You want to take care of your BMW yourself, but you do not have your own workshop. Start by asking what conditions the planned job requires.

The workspace is part of the job

Begin with suitable instructions. What surface, lighting, power supply or lifting equipment do they require? Could the vehicle need to stay overnight? Will you need facilities for fluids or waste disposal?

Answer these questions before choosing a location. Obtain permission for a private space and check local requirements. A publicly accessible parking space is not automatically suitable or permitted as a work area.

Compare three options

A suitable private space may work for certain tasks when equipment and permission are settled. A self-service workshop may provide a workspace and tools. A professional workshop can handle tasks beyond your experience or equipment.

Ask a self-service workshop specific questions: can you bring your own parts? Which tools are included? Is qualified support available? Can the car remain if the job takes longer? How are consumables and disposal charged?

Budget for the whole job

Compare the total cost of parts, tools, workspace, travel and possible help. Buying a tool makes more sense when you will use it repeatedly. For one job, renting equipment or paying a professional may be the better option.

A small start is a useful start

There is plenty you can organise before repairing anything yourself: confirm vehicle details, sort receipts, record maintenance dates and prepare a clear workshop request.

When you are ready for practical work, choose a task that matches your experience and the requirements of reliable instructions. More involved work can come later.
